Actuality of face recognition technology

Recently it appears that facial biometrics technologies are more and more on expansion. Security is interested, the domain of video game too, but other developers profit of some liberty to propose application on jailbroken mobile.

Different use cases

Security

Security features seem to be the most likely feature in the domain of facial recognition systems. The principle of biometry refers to the domain of protection, like your data among other things. To use your face instead of password, finger or vocal recognition seems to be very easy to manipulate.
A larger scale of this would be searching for a criminal amongst a complete crowd of in Brazil. The special, “Robocop” style lenses can scan 400 faces per second at 50 yards. These allow scanning 46’000 biometric points on a person’s face and compare it against a criminal database. According to them these lenses would like to prevent trouble in public order. An increase in security is necessary and will be used for the next World Cup 2014 in Rio de Janeiro.

The glasses named “Ex-Eye” will look like this

Video game

The great news about this subject is the terrible Kinect of Microsoft. This device allowing getting move recognition still makes noise. The next software named “Avatar Kinect” will allow people to discuss via its console. The discussion will be interpreted by avatars that reflect your image. Expression will been detected then virtually reproduced on your avatar, improving the interpretation of the conversation.

Mobile

Many applications have been developed on iPhone or Android. RecognizeMe is one of them, not official application who has been developed by apocolypse, creator of 3DBoard. This application is only compatible with jailbroken Apple devices. It gives you a preview of what would facial recognition would be like on a mobile.

The research institute Idiap is already in development for an official application named FaceonIt (read our post “FaceOnIt, facial recognition for your iPhone” about it). It allows testing the same algorithm of face recognition as KeyLemon on iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Conclusion

This technology doesn’t stop to surprise us. Lots of people are apprehensive as to the security that can be offered and others are very interested by the type of application they can get.
